NHL player props explained: goals, points, shots and saves

The main NHL player bets, how an over/under line works, how to turn a prop's price into a chance and check its margin, and what to look at before you bet on a player: the Teacher's guide.

A bet on a player, not on the score

A player prop is settled on one player's numbers in the game. Your team can lose 5-2 and your bet still wins if your player scores.

  • Anytime goal scorer: the player scores at least one goal.
  • First goal scorer: the player scores the first goal of the game.
  • Points: over or under a number of points, a point being a goal or an assist.
  • Shots on goal: over or under a number of shots that reach the net.
  • Goalie saves: over or under a number of saves by the goalie.

How an over/under line works

Most player lines end in .5, so a tie is impossible. Over 2.5 shots needs 3 shots or more; under 2.5 wins with 2 or fewer. Over 0.5 points means at least one goal or one assist.

💡 Read the house rules before you bet: they say whether overtime counts and what happens to your bet if the player does not play.

From the price to the chance

A player to score at +250 is priced at 3.50 in decimal odds: the implied chance is 1 ÷ 3.50, or 28.6%. If you think the player scores more often than that, the price is in your favour; if not, it is not.

On an over/under, add up the two chances to see the margin. With example prices of -125 for the over (1.80) and +105 for the under (2.05), the chances are 55.6% and 48.8%: 104.3% in total, so 4.3 points of margin.

What to look at before you bet

  • The line: which line and which power-play unit the player is on. A top-line forward gets more ice time, so more chances.
  • The goalie: for a saves bet, wait until the starting goalie is confirmed.
  • The opponent: a team that gives up a lot of shots helps the over on shots and on the other goalie's saves.
  • The price: compare it at every licensed sportsbook. On a prop, the gap between two sites can be large.

Player props are often combined with the result of the same game. The legs are linked, and every leg multiplies the margin: read our parlay guide before you build one.
